Prize Turkeys, Pig Races, and Lunch at the San Mateo County Fair by Cynthia P.

At the county fair on June 10th, we had lots of fun strolling and participating in various activities. I went to see the farm animals which consisted of chickens, cows, goats, and turkeys. My favorite was the first place winner for a turkey. It was the most beautiful of the bunch, with a long blue wattle; the specific term for a turkey neck is a wattle, according to Google! We also saw a camel and some horses available for riding. It was sad to see the camel sit under the sun for so many hours!  

After I visited the farm animals, I caught up with everyone else to watch the pig races. They were Alaskan raised pigs, and were cute as can be, with names like Sophie, Spencer, Bob, or Shirley Temple. After the pig races, the entire group had sandwiches, chips, and water provided by Aspire House. They really know how to take care of us! I’m glad they provided food and water so I didn’t have to purchase it myself because it is quite costly at the fair!

Right after we ate, the remaining members, who decided to stay until 6 p.m., went to see the duck races. I couldn’t see anything because there were so many people overcrowded in the area, so I waited for them by a wall. I heard the ducks were really cute, and fast!

We all headed to the butterfly exhibit afterwards. It was my favorite part. The butterflies fly all around you and you have a nectar stick to put in between a butterfly’s legs so they can grab on to and you’ll be able to observe the butterfly right in front of you, on your hand! All in all, it was a fun day.
