Clubhouse Week of Action: Aspire House Shows Up for San Mateo County
Last week, Aspire House joined Clubhouse International’s Week of Action, and we showed up where it counted.
Members and staff made the two and half hour drive to Sacramento to testify before the California Senate Budget Subcommittee No. 3 on Health and Human Services. Joel, Lisa, Steven, and Naliah stood before the committee and made the case for restoring Vehicle License Fee funding, a critical source of revenue for San Mateo County worth over $100 million annually that funds mental health services, housing, and essential community programs. Without it, programs like ours are at risk.
The hearing room was packed. Neighbors and advocates from across San Mateo County waited in line to get in, joined by representatives from multiple interest groups. We wore our Aspire House t-shirts and we stood out, a visible reminder that real people and real communities depend on this funding. We celebrated with In-N-Out on the way home.
The Clubhouse model is evidence-based and proven to reduce hospitalizations. A full year of recovery services costs the same as two weeks of psychiatric hospitalization. Communities thrive when everyone in them has the support they need to thrive.
We showed up last week because showing up for each other and making sure everyone feels heard is what we do. The people in that hearing room showed up for San Mateo County. Now we are asking you to show up for them.
We are $21,000 short of our $35,000 Giving Day goal and time is running out. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Please give today and help us keep going.
